Basics: Oil Pulling

I used to bartend at very loud bar in Rockefeller Center. The headaches I used to get were always a killer. One day, I was eavesdropping on a coworker who was raving about oil pulling curing all of her hangovers.  I’d never heard of this and while quite skeptical that oil can work so many wonders, I asked her to school me. Jen broke it down for me and now we will give you the 411 on Oil pulling so you can avoid all the mistakes we initially made.

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?
An ancient method used in ayurvedic medicine, It is a form of oral cleansing . By swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, you're detoxifying your gums and teeth, thus protecting and improving your oral health, you prevent a long line of diseases.

EASY TIPS TO BETTER PULLING
Always on an empty stomach. Best to first thing when you wake up in the morning.

BABY STEPS TO 20 MINUTES

When I first started I thought this was a piece of cake but 20 minutes is a Long time toswoosh and all the gunk build up while pulling is not tolerable from the get-go. Build up to it. Start with 5 minutes. Every day add a little more time until you get to that 15-20 minute mark.

START SLOW

Oil Pulling is not a sprint it’s a marathon. Don’t swoosh so fast from the start. You’ll be pulling for quite a few minutes and your jaw will hurt if you swoosh rapidly from start to finish. While pulling does work the jaw muscles, you don’t want to strain it or hurt yourself out of it. Take your time and find an easy normal pace at which to pull.

DON’T SWALLOW/ DON’T GARGLE

You’ll quickly feel a lot of build up and you’ll have to resist the urge to spit out everything too early but most importantly resist the urge to swallow. All the pulling you are doing is extracting toxins to your mouth, you don’t want to swallow them and put them right back into your system.

DON’T SPIT OUT INTO YOUR SINK

It still is oil and once it hardens you don’t want to end up with a clogged sink. Spit into your trash and save yourself a plumbing problem.

RINSE AND BRUSH

After you are done pulling, rinse your mouth even rinse with warm water to make sure all the oil is out. Then go about your normal brushing and flossing.

OIL PULLING DOES NOT REPLACE A DENTIST. Don’t forget your routine check ups with your dentist are irreplaceable!
