Power Girls - Luiza Melo

Power Girls is a series showcasing how real women conquer work & life challenges but still balance to sweat, eat clean and fit wellness into their everyday lives.

Tell us about yourself. What is your background?
I am Brazilian and I grew up in Rio between the sea, fruit juice and the mountains. I left my country for France to do my studies in fashion. Today I work in press and I love this job because it allows me to meet interesting and creative people all the day long.

How do you start your day?
With a cool shower to wake me up well. Then if I have some time I do some stretching and  I eat my homemade breakfast.

Whats your daily relationship with food? Take us through your eats from start to finish.
I adoreeeeee food!!! In the morning I usually have homemade granola with coconut yogurt or  with fruit and/or a smoothie with almond milk and several different fruits.
For lunch, as I do not necessarily have time to prepare food the previous  evening for the next day, I get take out from La Guinguette d'Angele which is next to my office. I love their bento boxes as they are always balanced or I go to Wild and The Moon.

In the afternoon I often eat a fruit (banana, apple, nectarine, peach) or compte. In the evenings,  I love cooking with my boyfriend. We always do a dish with baked vegetables and a protein (meat, fish or tofu) or soup if it's cold and sometimes we order a nice pizza haha! I always try to eat balanced and varied diet.

What are some of your kitchen staples?
Fruits. so lots of strawberries, raspberries, bananas. Almond milk to makes my smoothies and of course avocado and lemon.

When did you begin your fitness/ health journey? How has that impacted your life?
I started my "health journey" about a year ago. I was not feeling good about myself nor did I take care of my body. I had a very intense work rhythm and I decided to make some changes gradually.
For example, I replaced cow's milk with almond milk or coconut milk, cakes with fruits and above all I began doing alot of sports to let off steam. I immediately felt much better, I had more energy and was certainly less tired. Now I'm a complete fan of a more active life and I can not go back. I am very impressed to see how just a few change of habits made me feel better right away.

What are some of your challenges transitioning over to a healthier life?
The hardest thing for me was to understand that this change was a long-term commitment, a life change and food choices and the results would come with time. I had to learn to be patient, positive and determined to make those changes my way and not cheat myself by dieting to get very quick results.

How do you like to sweat?
I go almost every day to Dynamo Cycling to pedal for 45 minutes with a cool playlist. I also love yoga. I do it once a week with my teacher Clotilde Chaumet and again alone at home before starting my day.

On long days or when workouts get monotonous , how do dig up motivation?
I always think about how I'll feel after doing sports. It is this feeling of well-being that I love so much and that motivates me when I'm tired after a long day of work.

What role does music play in your workout?
Music is really important to me when I workout. It helps me focus, to push myself to go further. Occasionally, if I have a good playlist, I even manage to forget that I'm playing sports. Right now I have the new album of Frank Ocean: Blonde, on repeat.

What is your beauty Regimen? One step you never skip?
I do not necessarily have a "beauty routine" but I always clean my face in the morning at sunrise and in the evening before going to bed and in the summer I always cary "thermal water"  in my bag to refresh myself.

Any beauty Essentials?

My daily scrub from Dermalogica and my two moisturizers : Hydraphase and the jojoba and avocado cream from Pai Skincare, and of course drink at least 1.5 liters of water !!!

We really live by beauty from the inside out and less is more? What do these Menos Mas Mantra's mean to you?
It is a philosophy that I believe in 100%. The key is to be well in the mind and in physically and to get there we do not need much: just to have a healthy and balanced diet, do some sport. Then  you are shining!

Best advice you've ever gotten
Always trust yourself and your gut!
